바람이 불면 살랑이는 꽃잎은 나에게 리듬감을 주고, 수면 위로 반짝거리며 다가오는 작고 큰 파도의 물결은 항상 내 마음에 스며든다. 김형선 작가는 눈에 보이지 않는 이 자연의 무한한 생명력과 아름다움을 간결하고도 절제된 작가만의 조형언어로 리듬감 있게 캔버스에 담아낸다. 이 모습은 단순히 자연이 아니라 모두가 치유와 위로가 될 수 있는 작가가 꿈꾸는 세상으로서 작가의 고유한 공간으로 표현된다.
작가는 페인팅 나이프를 이용해 대담하지만 절제된 터치로 캔버스 위에 그려진 ‘선’이나 ‘면’ 들을 바람의 공기나 소리 혹은 파도의 물결이 살아있는 듯 간결하고 반복적으로 표현한다. 나이프로 그려진 간결한 선이나 굴곡들은 작가의 몸짓이며 이를 통해 탄생과 죽음을 반복하면서 연속성을 이루는 자연의 일부분인 인간의 삶을 조명한다.

작가의 그림은 회화의 평면성에서 벗어나 마치 조각적 회화를 보이기도 한다. 밀려왔다가 부서지는 파도의 포말의 모습에 영감을 받아 시작된 이 작품들은 그림과 조각의 경계선을 넘나들며 팔레트 나이프를 이용해 대담하지만 절제된 터치로 물감의 질감을 그대로 살려 입체감을 표현한다. 각각의 조각들이 캔버스에 생명감을 불어넣은 듯, 리드미컬한 이 작품들은 다양한 보조제를 이용해 가늘거나 혹은 두텁게 조각하며 덧붙이고 쌓아 미묘하고도 형형색색 변화하는 자연에서 오는 끝없는 생명력의 아름다움을 보여준다. 돌출된 조각들의 그림자로 인해 하루 동안 흘러가는 시간, 들어오는 빛들에 따라 그림이 다르게 보이는 특징을 가진 이 작품들은 감상자에게 각기 다른 느낌으로 다가오길 소망한다. 나의 작품은 사람들에게 날카롭지만 한편으론 잔잔하게 위치한 작품 속에 초대하여 마음으로 자연의 끝없는 아름다움을 바라보고 그 소리까지 듣기를 기대해본다.

When the wind blows, the petals sway and it gives me a sense of rhythm. Small and big waves glittering on the surface and approaching always permeate my mind. Artist Hyungsun Kim rhythmically expresses this invisible vitality and beauty of nature on the canvas with her simple and moderate formative language. This appearance isn’t simply nature but a world where everyone can be healed and comforted. It is the world that the artist dreams of and it’s expressed as her distinct space.
Using a painting knife, ‘lines’ and ‘sides’ are drawn on the canvas with bold and moderate touches. They’re simply and repeatedly expressed as if air or sound of the wind or waves are alive. Drawn with a knife, simple lines or curves are the artist's gestures, illuminating human life as part of the nature that achieves continuity while repeating birth and death.

The artist's painting shows a sculptured painting, getting out of the flatness of painting. She has started working on pieces since she was inspired by foams of waves that surge and break. While the pieces cross the borders of painting and sculpture, bold but moderate touches by a palette knife nurture the texture of painting to express the three-dimensional effect. As each part gives life to the canvas, rhythmical pieces are used with various supplements to sculpt thickly, add, and stack on it which presents the beauty that comes from the nature that subtly and variously changes. Because of shadows of the protruded sculpture, the painting looks different depending on the time passing through the day and lights coming into. With these characteristics, I hope that the pieces will appear with each different feeling to audiences. My pieces may be sharp to people, on the other, I like to invite people to pieces that gently locate so that they can look at the endless beauty of nature in their mind - even listen to the sound of it.
